Ways to Cowgirl Up an Outfit

3 Quick Ways to Cowgirl Up an Outfit.

You’re looking at your invitation to a “western” something. Aghhh! What do you wear?

First of all, relax. I mean relax your outfit.  Cowboy style is all about the relaxed easy-going look. Now walk, don’t run to your closet.

Pull out your favorite pair of jeans.  If you have a couple of styles- boot cut, straight leg, jeggings- get them all out. Then pick out a top to wear with them.  You can tuck it in or leave it out, or do the half-tuck, whichever looks best on you.  Lace, plaid, cotton print can all work with this look. Graphic tees are popular right now.

Now let’s COWGIRL UP.

Step 1 to Cowgirl Up an Outfit:  Shoes

Of course, a western boot is the most popular footwear to cowgirl up an outfit.  But don’t overlook some of the western style shooties.  They can be low or high heeled and round, pointed or square toed.  The options are limitless. But if you’re wearing boot cut jeans, they should go over the boot with enough length to cover your heel or even touch the floor. If it is warm, flip-flops with bling or a western flare are a great option.

Step 2 to Cowgirl Up an Outfit: Belt

This accessory is going to depend on your figure type.  A low-slung wide belt worn over a top can conceal a tummy.  If you’re tucking in a top, a belt that fits through your jean loops works well.

A belt can have a narrowing effect when you are pairing your top with a cardigan, vest, kimono top, or jacket. The big and fitted rule applies.  If the outer top is loose, like a kimono style, the inside should be fitted. A belt with this look helps draw the eye towards the center.

Step 3 to Cowgirl Up an Outfit:  Jewelry

Silver and turquoise just screams western.  Even when pairing with a plain white button-up, there is no classier look. Chunky stones are very in and can transform a lace top from dressy to western. They don’t have to be real to be a great accessory to cowgirlup an outfit.

Hats are optional. Don’t go for the look if you’re not sure. The pink hat you bought at the fair is probably not a good idea unless you’re 4 years old. If the hat is not a classic shape authentic cowboy hat, go without.

Most of all the cowgirl look is an attitude.  Relax and have fun at your next western soiree.
